Siegfried’s Deli

I first heard about Siegfried’s right after I did my Robin’s Nest review.  Robin’s Nest has some of the best sandwiches in SLC, UT, but one of my readers suggested I try one of Siegfried’s famous reuben sandwiches before I gave away the title “Best Sandwich” to Robin’s Nest.  Seems like lately I’ve received lots of requests from various places around town, and believe me when I say I want to visit them all, but I’ve been meaning to visit Siegfried’s for so long now, last Friday afternoon seemed like the perfect afternoon to try this “famous” reuben.  I walked into Reuben’s and the first thing that caught my eye besides the size of the lunch crowd was the statue you see above.  This “greeter” really set the stage for a great German ambience inside.  This deli was packed with all sorts of German greatness.  Just think of how Granato’s or Caputo’s Italian Deli’s have all things Italy.  Siegfried’s has all things German inside, from chocolates to every type of sausage you can think of.

My mindset when I walked in was that I was going for the Reuben and nothing was going to stop me.  That was when my inner Peyton Manning took over.  I immediately witnessed a few patrons walk past me with trays filled with a huge plate of piping hot food and sausages.  It was the “plate of piping hot food and sausages” that immediately set off an inner alarm that got me all hot and bothered.  You know the old Loony Toons cartoons where the character’s nose hits a whiff of a delicious scent, and it sends him floating in the air towards the source of that scent?  I knew it was time for my quarterbacking skills to kick in and call an audible at the last second.  I knew I wanted to try the Reuben, but looking up and the menu board, the lunch special was 2 Nurenburger sausages and 2 hot sides.  I decided to go with the special and trust my inner food radar instincts.  Probably either choice would have been fantastic, but I could not have been happier with what Siegried’s put down on my plate.

Let me break down this plate like MC Hammer for you.  On the right hand side I went with the fried potato.  This side dish was truly glorious.  I’m actually kinda regretting trying the fried potato because I’ve had french fries since my trip to Siegfried’s and it makes me sad,  sad that the french fries are not fried potatoes.   Coming from Idaho myself, I’ve always known that the potato is so versatile, you can make hundreds of different items with it.  The fried potato though has to be near the top of the list.  On the left hand side you have what Siegfrieds calls “Spaetzle”  I’m not even sure what it is made of so if any of my German readers know, please leave a comment on this post.  I’m going to take my best educated guess and say it is kinda like a potato dumpling spaghetti?  It was also drenched in a delicious and hearty brown gravy.  Then in the center of the plate you have your two Nurenburger sausages.  The sausages were long but thin.  What they lacked in thickness they certainly made up for in taste.  I was so happy with my lunch special plate, until ….   (wait for it)  Some dude sat down two seats next to me with a reuben sandwich.  I did my best not to come across as a creepy stalker guy, but between bites of my fried potato and spaetzle I looked over at his reuben sandwich and just knew that I was going to have to make a return visit to Siegfrieds.

I absolutely treasure my time and Siegfried’s Deli.  The food was incredible.  I really want to go back and try their reuben sandwich and perhaps a bratwurst or too.  And also if there is enough time go over to the German chocolate section and grab a treat or two.  (Okay I won’t kid you, I’m going to make time for the chocolate).  If you are downtown Salt Lake City and am in need of a lunch, and want to avoid the hornet’s nest that is the City Creek food court, take a stroll over to Siegfried’s for some German goodness.  If you want to look like David Hasselholf and be awesome, you will go to Siegfried’s.  This place is “legit” and “chill”  (some of my teenage fans shared those words with me because that is what kids say nowadays)

    Your guess about what spaetzle is was pretty close. It’s a flour-based dumpling that is made by pushing the dough through a colander or slotted spoon to create that noodle shape.
