Siragusa’s Taste of Italy

I love me some Italian food.  Seems like good Italian food is tough to come by in Salt Lake City.  Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen in this town.  You can get a street taco pretty much anywhere, but if you want some decent pasta or lasagna, then your options are limited.  That is why when I read about Siragusa’s in Taylorsville recently and the good reviews it was getting, I was pretty excited to try it out.  I had actually been to this location a year ago when it was a Colombian restaurant, so Siragusa’s is somewhat new to this corner off of Redwood Rd and 4100 South.  When we sat down, the song that was playing was Dean Martin’s “When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie … that’s amore!”  I knew right then if this place had Dean Martin playing, then it was legit.  Only legit Italian restaurants play the rat pack.  All others are failures.

Fried Mozzarella

After looking through the menu, I noticed that in the appetizer section was Fried Mozzarella for only $6.50.  No need to say anymore.  If we are making a Dummy’s Guide to being an Italian Restaurant, and if chapter 1 was to play lots of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, then chapter 2 would be to offer really tasty appetizers like anitpasta, brucheta, and fried mozzarella.  So far so good.  The mozzarella was melted all the way through with no clumps.  It was not over-fried like some places do it.  And the marina sauce was so good.  I admit that it is difficult to get fried cheese wrong, but the fact that this opening dish was so cheap and delicious, it was a harbinger of glorious things to come later.

The Godfather

Remember that scene in The Godfather where Andy Garcia is rolling the gnocci?  I noticed on Siragusa’s menu that they had sweet potato gnocci in alfredo sauce, and that I could even add sausage to it.  Hmmmm.  Life certainly has lots of tough choices and decisions in it, but this wasn’t one of them for me.  I had to go with the gnocci!

Sweet Potato Gnocci

This dish was so good!  The gnocci was perfectly tossed in alfredo sauce, and was resting on a bed of spinach and mushrooms.  The italian sausage chopped up was spectacular.  And do you see the size of that garlic bread?  There is nothing not to love about this plate.  And guess what?  It was even under $10 bucks!  Where can you find delicious Italian food of this quality for such a deal?  Not Olive Garden!

Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan

Of course they have all of your Italian favorites as well.  Chicken Parmesan and Lasagna were my wife’s choice for dinner.  I’d like to point out the fettucine was so good!  My wife is hard to impress when it comes to pasta, and she was ranting and raving the entire dinner on how good it was.  Yummy.

For dessert it was a toss-up between tiramisu or a cannoli.  We went with the tiramisu, and were rewarded with awesomeness.


In conclusion, I LOVED Siragusa’s Taste of Italy.  It had a real “family” feel from the music to the service.  Our waitress was very attentive the entire time we were there.  The food was spectacular, and I don’t feel like I was just robbed like I feel when I go to other expensive Italian places.  I’m probably going to visit again next week for lunch.  You should too!
